SSSL British Regime

When the British took over from the French in 1760, They made a treaty promise to protect lands inhabited from Indigenous nations in the vicinity of Montreal including Kahnawà:ke.

SSSL French Regime

In 1680 during the French Regime, King Louis XIV of France granted some 45000 of acres of land to the Jesuit’s for the use and enjoyment of the Iroquois of the Sioux.

Seigneury Lands Consultations Come to a Close

For 300 years the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis has been problematic for Kahnawà:ke, but in the last few months there has been significant progress made in negotiations with the federal government. Direction from Community is now necessary to determine Kahnawà:ke’s next move. Community consultations on possible Land settlement scenarios have been ongoing since December and are now wrapping up.

Seigneury Community Consultations off the Ground

Consultations on the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis Land Grievance officially got off the ground with a special community meeting held at the Golden Age Club on Tuesday, December 2nd. We spoke with Grand Chief Mike Delisle Jr and Project Leader Winona Polson Lahache.
