The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that consultations on the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis land grievance will officially begin in early December.

The announcement was made by Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle, Jr. at last night’s Fall Community Meeting.

“As we get closer to reaching a settlement, we need more than ever to engage the community on the matters of lands and other issues,” said Grand Chief Delisle. “We need to meet with as many people as possible, whether individually or in groups. As the ads say: Come have your say.”

The first ‘public forum’ consultation session will be held at the Golden Age Club on Tuesday, 2 Tsothóhrha/December from 6:30pm to 9pm. It is expected that other such forums will be scheduled in the New Year. Additionally, Kahnawa’kehró:non will be able to sign up for individual, family or group sessions.

“We will share as much information as we can so that community members have the information they need as we head to consultations,” said Grand Chief Delisle. Knowledge is power, and nowhere is this more important than the Seigneury grievance.”

In 1994 the MCK and Canada engaged in a joint process to clarify and resolve the long-standing grievance. In 2003, Kahnawà:ke accepted a formal offer from Canada to negotiate a settlement. Talks continue today.
